Barn-find Ferrari’s are the stuff that carguy dreams are made of. We decided not to post this one the other day but now we’ve changed our minds. The Lotus Elan (and 26R) played the role of David vs. the Goliaths of Ferrari, Porsche and Jaguar during the late 1960s and 1970s.  Lotus never raced factory 26R’s but supported privateers and their successful racing ventures. The cars originally were sold in kit form so it’s unknown how many were built, estimates usually fall around 97 cars. With so few real 26R’s built, they are difficult to find and massively expensive. 

We like this particular Elan because it has South African racing history beginning early in its life, so it’s not some recent build someone is trying to make money on; the car has history. The seller claims this Elan is extremely lightweight (we are suckers for anything that’s been lightened to <1500 lbs!), is nicely set up with Quaife competition close-ratio gearbox, Full 26R chassis reinforcements and comes with a very complete documentation of the vintage racing history, invoices and dyno sheet. Those familiar with Ruf know that it is has been THE Porsche tuner for the past few decades, creating cars like the CTR Yellowbird, BTR, RGT and RT 12. Nice examples of these cars can be tough to find, so when we came across this one we knew we had to share it.

This is a BTR conversion which was the exact car featured in the May 1997 issue of Car and Driver. It started life with rare options including Sunroof Delete and Rear Seat Delete from the factory. Here’s something you don’t see every day: a white vintage Ferrari. While it normally wouldn’t be our first choice of color, we think white compliments the 400 Superamerica really well. The seller claims this car is 1 of 14 with the Aerodinamica body work (styled by Pininfarina) and that this was the Geneva Autoshow car.

When buying a Ferrari, it’s always important to note the history and service records. This example has exceptional ownership history and has just recently been certified by Ferrari under their Classiche program, helping to add to the provenance. While the 400 S/A is not quite as desirable as the 410 S/A, we’d love to have this one in our garage. We’d pull the rear fender skirts off to show the whole rear tire and drive the heck out of it. These vintage Ferrari’s can actually be pretty reliable if driven and maintained properly.
