Brian Redman Track Event: Targa Sixty Six (66) Palm Beach @ PBIR

Targa 66 Palm Beach

On our way back from sunny Palm Beach where we spent a few days at Brian and James Redman’s Targa Sixty Six (66) and wanted to write a small review. In short, if you’re looking for track days that aren’t too competitive but give you a LOT of track time, in a relaxed but safe environment, this is a great event. Pricing is $1,500 for three days of driving which seems expensive until you notice you can bring multiple cars with up to two drivers. So, pricing comes out to $250 per person, per day, which is very reasonable. …Read More »

Original Racing History: McKee Mk III with Lola T70 Body

LS

This Lola-looking racecar is actually a McKee, the third chassis McKee Engineering constructed. The story is that Carroll Shelby ordered it for Bob Johnson to compete in the 1964 USRRC and until recently its whereabouts were unknown. There is some great information on the early McKee chassis and this car specifically in a thread you can find here at Autosport.com. What you need to know is, this car used to be an open cockpit with a unique body. By all accounts, it was involved in a few shunts and the original body needed modification and eventually the car ended up with the nose from Dan Gurney’s Lotus 18. In the early 70’s or so, it seems a fellow had the current Lola T70 body fitted to make it more competitive with the cars running at the time. Fully original it is not but this car has a unique history which is always welcomed. …Read More »

Vintage Racecar, Driver Needed: 1965 Sunbeam Tiger

LS

If you’ve been looking for a fully prepped B Production vintage racer at a reasonable price, this Sunbeam may be a good option. At an asking price of $55,000 this Tiger is probably one of the most cost effective ways to get out and run with Shelby Mustangs and Cobras while not worrying quite as much about your wallet. This car has a long list of events it’s previously competed in, literally dozens of events on the West Coast from Thunderhill down to Coronado over the past 10 years. We often prefer a car that’s been driven and used, especially if the new owner plans to use it, as hopefully a lot of the bugs are already worked out. …Read More »

Carrera Panamericana Runner: 1964 Ford Falcon

LS

Looking to run the Carrera Panamericana and on a budget? This Ford Falcon could be your affordable ticket. Don’t know what the Carrera Panamerica is but you’re a racer guy or at least someone who’s looking to race a vintage car? What you need to know is that it’s the last open, top-speed road race of its kind in the world. Seven days of flat out racing on closed public roads running 2,000 miles through Mexico north to the Texas border. It is a revival of the famous international Pan Am that was conducted between 1950-1954, a great tribute to a historic event. …Read More »

Championship Winning Trans Am Car: 1969 Penske Racing Camaro Z28 of Mark Donahue/Roy Woods

RS

This is perhaps the car from the Golden Era of the Trans Am Series. There’s a good write up here if you want to learn more about the details of Trans Am racing but really all you need to know is that SCCA Trans Am was the 1960’s version of what NASCAR is today– Huge. “Win on Sunday, sell on Monday” was the common theme that kept most American car manufacturers racing on the weekends. Ford and Shelby Mustangs, Boss 302’s, AMC Javelin’s and Mercury Cougars battled Camaro’s like this one through out the late 60’s and into the early 1970’s. Because the cars were still largely based on production models, privateers could build cars and race head-to-head against factory cars; this made for some of the best sportscar racing in the history of the US. What we have here is one of the “privateer” cars, run by Team Penske, sponsored by Sunoco and driven by Mark Donohue (cool first hand stories about Mark here) to win the Trans Am Series Championship in 1969. …Read More »
