Evolved Vintage Racer: 1962 Kellison-Corvette

Jim Kellison was an Air Force pilot during the Korean War who later studied aircraft engineering at UCLA. In 1954, he founded Kellison Engineering and begain professionally engineering sports cars with fiberglass bodies, at a price point sometimes twice that of a Corvette! For more info on Kellison, his company and his cars, check out this great aritcle in
Kit Car Magazine. This particular Kellison “Special” (the seller claims 1 of 5) is fitted with a fuel-injected Corvette 327 so you’ll be able to hold your own against those big Ferrari V-12’s when you’re placed next to them on the grid. Because this particular car is eligible for some many vintage events, $175,000 seems like a reasonable point of entry, especially when you factor in that you get to run with the multi-million dollar Ferrari’s, Jags, Cobra’s and the like.
Besides being able to run with the big boys, this car has some really cool attributes. It has period racing history, with wins from places like Laguna Seca and Salt Lake. The seller has some photos of the car from those days, which are great to see; in this case any and all history is helpful. Additionally, this car has recently been gone through completely by the person who originally built it and, as the seller claims, the result is a fresh and beautifully restored, well sorted vintage race car. The car has definitely evolved from its first days on the track but as with any of these “home-growns,” that’s normal and in this case the car looks much improved.
We’d love to see this car continue its attendance at some of the great West Coast vintage racing events when sold. We’re sure the Corvette V8 would be enjoyable on the track and we all know it will sound great. For a pretty detailed write up, including more history and a story about the car’s creation, check out the listing at Fantasy Junction in Northern California.
