Dinan Tuned: 2000 BMW S2 M5

If you think the E60 (current generation) M5 is too big but the E39 (last generation) doesn’t have enough juice, this Dinan S2 M5 might be your perfect solution. With 471hp, a real 6 speed and 0-60 times of 4 seconds flat, it’s capable of just about anything you can throw at it, including taking your buddies to the country club in style. For a solid review, check out this article in Car & Driver from 2002 where they call the S2 a “rocket” with “no downside.” Just the parts from Dinan in California total over $30k, making this seem like a pretty good deal at $45,000.
The seller claims to have all the documentation to go along with the Dinan build. Additionally, it’s got a S2 serial number, so a certified Dinan, which is always helpful. The seller claims the car is near perfect and for piece of mind, it’s nice to know it has been well kept. In the past year the car has been treated to a new battery, new Yokohama Advan Sports, replaced cam sensor, new mass air sensors and filters and new Rotora 6-piston front calipers and Rotora rotors and pads all around and a service/fluid change. It also comes with an extra set of M5 wheels, which add some value.
The only real downside to this car is the fact that it’s a 2000 model year versus a 2001. The differences mostly have to do with some interior bits (older style steering wheel and Nav screen) and no “Angel Eye” halogen headlights. To change out the interior bits would be quite a bit of money and probably not worth it but a lot of folks make upgraded headlights so those could be done easily and would update the look as well as help vision at night.
Otherwise, this car is truly versatile. It’s so well engineered and balanced that it would be equally at home driving you to work as on an open-track day with BMWCCA. Don’t forget, if ever you crave more power, you can always send it back to Dinan for the 621hp S3 package. For more info check out the car at F40 Motorsports in Portland, Connecticut.
