October 2, 2009: After the reserve was not met at $210,100.00, the owner has reposted this 959S on EBay with a Buy-It-Now price of $395,000. We’ve also recently noticed the car for sale on Hemmings, for the same price.

September 24, 2009: The Porsche 959 is often attributed to starting the “supercar” craze of the late 80’s and 90’s, which gave birth to cars such as the Ferrari F40, Bugatti EB110, Jaguar XJ220 and later, the mighty McLaren F1. The 959 was originally built to enter the infamous FIA “Group B” rally series but the class that was home to the fastest, most powerful and sophisticated rally cars ever built was banned due to high level of danger for drivers and spectators; most cars never ran. Porsche took the same rally racing technology and used it in their road going version, the 959 you see here. Check the video after the jump to see what we’re talking about.

For a taste of the real thing, watch this quick clip of the Paris-Dakar Rothmans rally car followed by Alain de Cadenet describing the street version 959.

The following article, written about 5 years ago in Sports Car Market gives a good overview of Porsche 959’s. The pricing bits are off, as the market has changed, but the rest of the info still holds true.

This particular car is great for many reasons. Canepa Design in Northern California has done $250,000 worth of modifications and enhancements to make this car better than new and legal to drive in the States. The way this car is prepared, it’s versitile enough to do just about anything; you’re guaranteed to have a fan club showing up at a PCA concours, rally or open track day in this 959.

For more info, check the car out on EBay in Arizona, being sold by its second owner.
