October 13, 2009: Well, that was fast! EBay shows the Cobra R sold last night for the “Buy It Now” price of $37,900. Looks like there are still people buying cars out there…

October 11, 2009: If you’re looking for a “future collectible” or a car you can hold on to for a long time, drive, enjoy and not worry about, a 2000 Cobra R is probably a solid bet. We’ve thought these cars were cool since they debuted in 2000 and with only 300 in existence, they have a rarity factor regardless. The Ford Mustang is an American icon and there is no doubt they’ve proved themselves as worthy sports cars and the 2000 Cobra R is no different. It’s actually a more race-oriented, lighter, more powerful version of the typical Cobra and for only $35,000 we’d much rather have one of these versus a newer Shelby GT500, Saleen or SMS.

Ford didn’t just throw a body kit on a 2000 Cobra and call it a Cobra R. The differences between this and other Mustangs are vast, for each and every spec you can check out this page from Mustangworld. The major differences are things like the 5.4L naturally aspirated V8 with Aluminum heads and aluminum flywheel (only Mustang to ever used this motor btw), a Tremec 6 speed, Brembo brakes, Eibach springs, Recaro seats and a Fuel Safe Systems fuel cell. Basically, just bolt in a roll cage and harnesses and you’re ready to hit the track.

We like this particular car because the seller seems straight forward and realistic, the car looks very original and it’s reasonably priced at $35k. These cars were trading in the high 40’s to the mid 50’s as recently as last year, but given the economy, they’ve come down like everything else. Additionally, this example only has a bit over 8k miles, no paintwork or accidents and comes with a few extras like Kenny Brown front and rear strut braces. You can find this Cobra R on EBay located in Ogden, Utah.
