Vintage Can-Am Race Car: 1980 T530 Lola Chevrolet Chassis T530-HU8

If you’re already looking forward to next August and the Monterey Historics, this might be your chance to run with the big boys for a reasonable price. Lola T530’s, especially Chevy powered T530’s, dominated the Can-Am series in the early 80’s and while this car didn’t dominate, it has had an interesting history.
If you first want a background in this series, this article has a decent write-up on what Can-Am was. The best years of the series were arguably the earlier years, through the 60’s and 70’s, but the later cars still have a following. These were driven by the likes of Patrick Tambay, Bobby Rahal, Danny Sullivan, Elliot Forbes-Robinson (EFR) and Al Holbert, many of whom went on to very successful careers in IMSA Grand Touring Prototypes (GTP) and other forms of racing.
This car seems to have an interesting history in that it’s been crashed and the tub replaced, seemingly twice. We’ve found a picture of what we suspect to be this car, here from the Can-Am race at Mid Ohio in 1981. You will find a good database for Lola chassis numbers on this site. As a back-up, this place has a similar history for this T530.
Of course, with any purchase like this, it’s important to get as much history and documentation as possible before pulling the trigger. If everything checks out with this car and it was put back together properly, a new buyer could be in for a good deal, due to the less-than-favorable history. We know we’d have no problem blasting down the front straight at Laguna Seca in this Lola. For more info see the car here on EBay in Texas.
