12 Hours of Sebring Race Car: 1965 Austin Healey Sprite Coupe

Here’s an opportunity to purchase a documented car with race history from the 1965 12 hours of Sebring. For those of you who don’t know the 12 Hours of Sebring, you can read more here and find some interesting tidbits and results here. Importantly, the track was originally built around an old Army airstrip and is considered one of the premier endurance events in the United States; it’s famous for starting during the day and finishing in the dark of night. It has always attracted famous drivers from around the world, including: Mario Andretti, A.J. Foyt, Juan Manuel Fangio, Phil Hill, Dan Gurney, Hurley Haywood and for many years Sebring was part of the World Sportscar Championship.
This Austin Healey is pretty neat for a number of reasons. There seems to have only been two “Sebring” Coupe bodies built, of which this is one. The seller claims that this car is largely period correct, as when he bought it, he had it sent to Geoff and Donald Healey in England to have it restored. Along with being “factory” original, the car comes with the original file from when it ran Sebring in 1965 including: entry form, tech sheet, shipping docs and pictures of the car being built. Check out the in-period photos of the car, very cool.
We’d love to own this car and run it back at the Sebring Enduro or 4 Hour Finale with HSR. One thing we’d check out, before we moved much further, is the documentation on how this car finished at the 12 hours. The owner seems to say it won in Class, but these guys don’t show that being the case. For more info, you can find it on EBay from a private seller in Royal Oak, Michigan. It’s still got a lot of time left on the auction which is starting at $20,000 Reserve Not Met.
