Arrest-Me Red: 1985 AC AutoKraft Cobra

We’re not sure but we think the term “Arrest-Me Red” came about specifically for this car. Nothing screams speed like a Cobra: real, fake, continuation, or otherwise. The AutoKraft Cobra, to many is the first real “continuation” Cobra, originally filling a space that has now been over taken by the Shelby CSX4000, 6000, 7000 and 800 series Cobras. When they were originally built, starting in the early 80′s, the AC AutoKraft Cobra was built at the AC factory using the same molds and jigs as the original cars. This car is aluminum, like the originals and AutoKraft Cobra’s are recognized in the Shelby American Registry.
We like this particular car because it’s a fine example of what a street Cobra should be. Rear exit exhaust (although we’d prefer split pipes, one on each side), no rollbar and full bumpers. We’ll let the hood scoop slide but think the car would look great without it. Most of these came equipped with a Ford 302 and 5 speed and this one is no different. This drive train set up, coupled with slightly more room over an original Cobra, will make this a great car to drive, take to cruise nights and enjoy. Additionally, this car has some really nice bits that offset it from other AutoKraft car’s we’ve seen. It’s got the shortened Mark III version nose, proper looking Halibrand wheels, Moto Lita wheel, a soft top and tonneau cover for real world usability. The previous owner removed the radio and antenna which gives a more appropriate and original look, we’d have done the same.
This Cobra is priced at $69,900, which we consider to be fair. Given that finished aluminum Shelby’s or Kirkham’s trade at prices in the 90-120K range, this car is a fine deal for someone who’s looking for an aluminum Cobra but doesn’t want to spend 6 digits. Find this one at Ooley and Blackburn in Carmel, Indiana.
